Did you know…there are things you no longer need on your resume? Here are 3 things you no longer need to include on your resume.
Resume writing has come a long way but the importance of an effective resume is still key to landing the interview, leading to your next great job.
Here are 3 things you no longer need on your resume.
- Your home address. Including home addresses on resumes are a thing of the past. Employers do not need to know where you live, they need to know how to contact you. Include your email address and the best contact telephone number so employers can reach you.
- Career objective. You no longer need to type a lengthy career objective for your resume. Employers know you are interested, otherwise, you would not have applied. Quite honestly, recruiters just don’t have the time to read lengthy statements telling them what they already know. As a replacement to your career objective, highlight 3 great skills or relevant experiences. For example: If you are seeking a leadership role in manufacturing, your three relevant skills or experiences may be:
Leadership – Manufacturing – Cost Savings.
This is an example but hopefully, you get the point.
3. Your life story. Your resume should showcase your most recent 10 years of experience. It is not necessary to list every job from your entire career. The world changes quickly and so does technology. Chances are, what you did more than 10 years ago has changed or evolved. If you do have relevant experiences that you feel should be included, list them in an ‘additional skills’ category.
Bonus tip: Unless you are a recent college graduate with a 3.5 GPA or better, do not include your GPA on your resume. Your GPA in college, 10+ years ago is no longer relevant. Also, if your GPA is not high, don’t include it. Interviewers will rarely, if ever ask. Don’t give them insight to a low GPA. A low GPA does not mean you cannot do the job. It most likely means you had fun in college. The point is, you graduated. That
Finally, if you are unsure what to include, ask someone. You can check with a friend, a recruiter or a resume consultant. The first impression of you to a potential employer is your resume. Make sure your resume grabs their attention.
