Top 5 Resume DON’Ts
After a long career in reading, reviewing, searching resumes, I am going to offer you my top five resume DON’Ts. As recruiters search through applicants and databases full of resumes, there are some things that will cause a recruiter to pass you by and move on to the next candidate.
Here are my Top 5 resume DON’Ts
- DON’T have a resume that is more than 2 pages, 3 at the most. If you post a 6 page resume, it will not get reviewed. It is far too long and recruiters just don’t have that kind of time.
- DON’T fill every single spot on the page. If your resume is too busy, it becomes difficult for recruiters to focus. A good resume has enough “white-space” to give it a polished look.
- DON’T put every detail of your work experience on your resume. Resumes are intended to be highlights of your career. Use keywords to get noticed. You can explain in more detail once you land the interview.
- Unless you are a recent college graduate, DON’T include your GPA when listing your education. Once you have been in the workforce for many years, your GPA becomes irrelevant.
- A sub-don’t for college graduates…if your GPA is not above a 3.5, don’t list it. In all of my years of interviewing, I have never, not once asked a candidate about their GPA. If it is low, who cares? You graduated and that’s what matters. GPAs are not always an accurate reflection of a candidate’s ability to be successful in a role.
- DON’T submit a disorganized resume full of typos or misspelled words. The look of your resume matters. Keep it organized and orderly and ask someone to proofread it for you.
Bottom line: Resumes don’t have to be fancy or complex. Your resume should reflect the very best of your work highlights and be full of keywords relating to your experience. Simple. Organized.
